Papers, 1902-1924.

The collection consists primarily of handwritten and typewritten correspondence, with some carbon copies, and of minimally processed papers, including administrative papers, charts, notes and lists. Hovey corresponded with other scientists, with members of the public, and with scientific organizations. Topics include the acquisition and identification of rocks and invertebrate fossils for the museum's collections, preparation of exhibits, and budgeting and other administrative matters. There are also personal letters, and letters written on Hovey's behalf by geology curator Chester A. Reeds. Papers include manuscripts of Hovey's publications and those of several other researchers.

Chester Albert Reeds was a geologist and museum curator. Reeds joined the American Museum of Natural History in 1912 as assistant curator in the Dept. of Geology and Invertebrate Paleontology, eventually becoming associate curator, then curator in 1927, following W.D. Matthew's move to California. Edmund Otis Hovey was a geologist and museum curator. He joined the American Museum of Natural History in 1894 as assistant curator in the Dept. of Geology and Paleontology, becoming associate curator in 1901 and curator in 1910.
